You forgot to mention that EA is including a surfing habit monitor:

Hey Tman - Been a while since we have seen any PDX guys around here. How's things?

Back on topic: I saw something about that today over at PlanetBattlefield:

QUOTE("Gamespot")
On a peculiar note, even though the world is ending in 2142, it appears that advertising will still be around. Battlefield 2142 features in-game ads, though we didn't get to see them firsthand during our testing. Still, there is a printed disclaimer that comes with the game telling you that Battlefield 2142 will analyze certain "advertising data" on your machine to determine what ads to display to you. Ironically, EA says that if you don't want your data shared with its advertising partner then "do not install or play the software on any platform that is used to connect to the Internet." But that would pretty much defeat the purpose of playing Battlefield 2142, wouldn't it? Of course, you could always play single-player against the artificial intelligence, though the AI won't be mistaken for human opponents any time soon, and the single-player is still limited to 16-player maps. Still, this is an example of things to come, as we begin to see dynamic in-game ads appear in more and more games.

They also had this little tidbit:
QUOTE("Gamespot Review")
Thankfully, 2142 has a cool new feature in Titan mode to accompany the traditional conquest mode. This is the first new mode introduced in Battlefield since the series' inception, and it's a great one.

Does no one remember that BF42 had TDM and CTF, as well as the objective mode stuff from Secret Weapons? It really surprises me what is being said about titan mode. While I'm happy that they are diversifying the modes available, to say that it is the first new mode is just plain wrong.

Not only is it adware, but it's spyware too... Could they throw in a trojan just to finish the asshat trifecta?

No way in hell I pay for something that runs in the background and monitors my habits. I don't even use free apps that have such things included with them.

I wonder that if you found a way to get around the ads, if that would be considered "hacking" and enforceable by Punkbuster or EA?

In theory wouldn't it be as simple as figuring out the port that the advertising stream uses and blocking it?

You should be able to figure out the URL it uses, then add that URL to your host file and point it to 127.0.0.1. If I could find someone who has a copy, I could figure it out and write up a tutorial. :-)

Yeah that would be good, but then again, it will probably result in a "can not find server error" and you won't be able to connect.

Also - if EA is planning on using some sort of service while you're surfing, I hope that WinPatrol will find it. That proggy is awesome at letting me stop crap from installing itself. (www.winpatrol.com)

BTW - Been a while Atomm! Been playing BF2 and POE. Although we're growing tired of BF2 and this BF 2142, while it will be OK for a bit, we're looking forward to either Quake Wars or UTK07. However, with this spyware crap, entirely possible that many may forgo it.

Wow Tman, we are right there with you. BF2 can only take us so far. With all the crap EA is doing with BF2142, we are in limbo until Quake Wars and UT2007 come out.

Also, check out Frontlines: Fuel of War www.frontlinesgame.com

It is the new game being developed by Trauma of the DC mod. It looks incredible.

Its amazing how far EA has gone to ruin the experience as compared to 1942. Used to be we waited with great expectations for the next FPS or its sequeal. Now, its only to be looked upon with skepticism. Whats really next for the BF series? MMORPGH with a monthly subscription? Looking at the ranking, powerups, and the 2142 kits, that seems to be damn likely.

Its going to take a clan working as a team to work 'quests'... well 2142 is damn near that already sad.gif

Spyware and advertising... pretty damn unreal.

Come Jan 07, we should know how many lemmings bought this joke.

Someone uploaded a picture of the "agreement" included with the game
