nice list Atomm, hopefully somehow EA will catch on. But I somehow doubt it.

You forgot to mention that EA is including a surfing habit monitor:

Hey Tman - Been a while since we have seen any PDX guys around here. How's things?

Back on topic: I saw something about that today over at PlanetBattlefield:

QUOTE("Gamespot")
On a peculiar note, even though the world is ending in 2142, it appears that advertising will still be around. Battlefield 2142 features in-game ads, though we didn't get to see them firsthand during our testing. Still, there is a printed disclaimer that comes with the game telling you that Battlefield 2142 will analyze certain "advertising data" on your machine to determine what ads to display to you. Ironically, EA says that if you don't want your data shared with its advertising partner then "do not install or play the software on any platform that is used to connect to the Internet." But that would pretty much defeat the purpose of playing Battlefield 2142, wouldn't it? Of course, you could always play single-player against the artificial intelligence, though the AI won't be mistaken for human opponents any time soon, and the single-player is still limited to 16-player maps. Still, this is an example of things to come, as we begin to see dynamic in-game ads appear in more and more games.

They also had this little tidbit:
QUOTE("Gamespot Review")
Thankfully, 2142 has a cool new feature in Titan mode to accompany the traditional conquest mode. This is the first new mode introduced in Battlefield since the series' inception, and it's a great one.

Does no one remember that BF42 had TDM and CTF, as well as the objective mode stuff from Secret Weapons? It really surprises me what is being said about titan mode. While I'm happy that they are diversifying the modes available, to say that it is the first new mode is just plain wrong.

Not only is it adware, but it's spyware too... Could they throw in a trojan just to finish the asshat trifecta?

No way in hell I pay for something that runs in the background and monitors my habits. I don't even use free apps that have such things included with them.

"My late Uncle Alex Vonnegut . . was a humanist like all the rest of the family. What Uncle Alex found particularly objectionable about human beings in general was that they so seldom noticed it when they were happy.

He himself did his best to acknowledge it when times were sweet. We could be drinking lemonade in the shade of an apple tree in the summertime, and Uncle Alex would interrupt the conversation to say, "If this isn't nice, what is?" I myself say that out loud at times of easy, natural bliss: "If this isn't nice, what is?" . . . I find it really cheers me up to keep score out loud that way."

I wonder that if you found a way to get around the ads, if that would be considered "hacking" and enforceable by Punkbuster or EA?

In theory wouldn't it be as simple as figuring out the port that the advertising stream uses and blocking it?

You should be able to figure out the URL it uses, then add that URL to your host file and point it to 127.0.0.1. If I could find someone who has a copy, I could figure it out and write up a tutorial. :-)

Yeah that would be good, but then again, it will probably result in a "can not find server error" and you won't be able to connect.

Also - if EA is planning on using some sort of service while you're surfing, I hope that WinPatrol will find it. That proggy is awesome at letting me stop crap from installing itself. (www.winpatrol.com)

BTW - Been a while Atomm! Been playing BF2 and POE. Although we're growing tired of BF2 and this BF 2142, while it will be OK for a bit, we're looking forward to either Quake Wars or UTK07. However, with this spyware crap, entirely possible that many may forgo it.

Wow Tman, we are right there with you. BF2 can only take us so far. With all the crap EA is doing with BF2142, we are in limbo until Quake Wars and UT2007 come out.

Also, check out Frontlines: Fuel of War www.frontlinesgame.com

It is the new game being developed by Trauma of the DC mod. It looks incredible.

Its amazing how far EA has gone to ruin the experience as compared to 1942. Used to be we waited with great expectations for the next FPS or its sequeal. Now, its only to be looked upon with skepticism. Whats really next for the BF series? MMORPGH with a monthly subscription? Looking at the ranking, powerups, and the 2142 kits, that seems to be damn likely.

Its going to take a clan working as a team to work 'quests'... well 2142 is damn near that already sad.gif

Spyware and advertising... pretty damn unreal.

Come Jan 07, we should know how many lemmings bought this joke.

I think the final statement says it all....

This is absolutely rediculous. I mean, even if I wanted the game, I wouldn't like seeing this first thing out of the box.

EA really knows how to take the fun out of gaming....

Okay with this new development I am now officially not going to buy it either.

I was not aware of this part. If true I am out. As DocJon said, I won't run ANYTHING that does that.
I won't even use Google Desktop as it tends to keep track of a bit too much. Google is not your friend either, believe me.

I was actually liking the game itself. It was not THAT bad overall and even fun, but I will not allow them to monitor me like that. If they remove that "feature" or allow me to opt out of it, I will then consider buying the game. I hate, but can live with, some bugs but this is just them going a little too far.

As for the list I agree with it except:

#6, No BF2 still crashes to desktop as well. wink.gif

#4, No Titan is not really onslaught. I guess it is similar if you pick it apart but it does not have the node system. Actually it may have been more fun that way. I wish it was more like Onslaught. wink.gif

#3 Oh man YES. WTF!!!! WHY can't they add CTF AND a PUSH system? UT Onslaught at least was sort of push. Push mode games are fun and really concentrate the action. how hard is it to program the normal
conquest mode to simply not allow a flag to be captured unless the ones behind it are. Come on now!
CTF would involve a bit more but the maps all everything else is there. No excuse. Titan mode is the one that involved a ton of additional programming. they could not have added CTF and PUSH as well or FIRST!!!

#2 The unlock system is annoying but they seem to be given fast enough that they may not have been so bad in the end. I would not have done it this way exactly. I would have given users at least 6 or so on character creation. that would at least allow you to get started.

Now some positive to 2142.

I was just enjoying the overall 2142 game. it was basically a modded BF2 with some nice additions. Buggy, yes but the overall game play was not far from BF2. That was one reason I liked it, it did feel like an upgrade.

I am bored so it was nice to do something different. I think this is what EA counts on though.

Yes and the best way to secure your computer is to not connect it to the Internet. tongue.gif

WTF???? How can you NOT connect it to the Internet to play an ON-LINE game????

MY HEAD HURTS!!!!
